5 Benefits of Indoor Cycling Beyond Burning Calories
Welcome to the very first NYX Blog.
We created this little corner of NYX to talk about all things indoor cycling - the questions you may have been too afraid to ask, the things your instructor wishes you knew, what’s actually happening to your body during those 45 minutes, and probably a little music, movement, and NYX chaos along the way.
For our first topic, we’re starting with a big one: Does indoor cycling actually benefit you beyond burning calories?
The short answer? Absolutely.
We love a sweaty workout as much as anyone, but your workout should be doing more for you than just burning calories. At NYX, there are no screens, no leaderboards, and no numbers telling you whether you had a “good” workout. We ride by rhythm, resistance, effort, and most importantly, how you feel. Indoor cycling can benefit your body physically, mentally, and emotionally. So, calories aside, here are five reasons we keep clipping in.
1. Your Heart Is Getting a Workout Too
At NYX, we rhythm ride, meaning our playlists aren’t just there because we like good music, although, obviously, we do. Our music is intentionally curated around the movements, speeds, and intervals you’ll experience throughout class.
Our rides are interval-based, so you’re never working at one intensity for the entire 45 minutes. Your instructor will take you through harder efforts followed by periods of recovery, asking your heart rate to rise, recover, and then do it all over again.
Why does that matter?
Your heart is a muscle too. Challenging it consistently helps build cardiovascular endurance and trains your body to deliver oxygen more efficiently. Over time, that can mean better stamina, improved recovery between hard efforts, and feeling less winded doing things outside the studio.
And we’re not just talking about becoming better at spin.
Walking up a flight of stairs. Hiking. Traveling. Chasing your kids around. Getting through a long day without feeling completely wiped. Cardiovascular endurance helps your body keep up with the life you actually want to live. Suddenly, that 45-minute ride feels a little bigger than just burning calories, doesn’t it?
2. Yes, Your Legs Are Working. But So Is Everything Else.
Turn that resistance knob and your glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves are immediately getting involved. But if you’re riding with proper form, the work doesn’t stop at your legs. Our movements require core stability and upper-body control, especially when you’re riding out of the saddle. When you minimize bouncing, control your movements, and let your muscles do the work, your entire body has to work together to keep you stable.
Think less flailing around because the beat dropped and more controlled movement while the beat drops. That’s where the work is.
Indoor cycling isn’t a replacement for traditional strength training, but resistance on the bike combined with intentional, controlled movement can make your ride a much more full-body experience than people realize.
3. Low Impact Doesn’t Mean Easy
This is one of our favorite things about indoor cycling. You can work hard without repeatedly pounding your joints. Unlike running or jumping, your feet stay connected to the bike throughout your ride. At NYX, our cycling shoes clip directly into the pedals, which helps keep your feet secure and supports consistent positioning throughout your pedal stroke.
That allows you to focus on smooth, controlled movement and proper form while still adding resistance, increasing your intensity, and challenging your cardiovascular system. So yes, indoor cycling is low impact.
But if you’ve taken a NYX class, you already know that does NOT mean low intensity.
4. Sometimes Your Brain Needs the Ride More Than Your Body Does
You know those days when your brain has approximately 47 tabs open? Same. For 45 minutes, class gives you somewhere to put all of that energy. The room gets dark. The music gets loud. Your phone isn’t in your hand. And instead of thinking about your inbox, your to-do list, or whatever happened before you walked through our doors, you’re thinking about the beat in front of you.
Movement can help reduce stress and improve your mood, but there’s also something incredibly valuable about simply giving yourself 45 uninterrupted minutes to be present.
Some days you’ll walk into NYX ready to absolutely crush it. Other days, simply getting yourself through the door is the accomplishment. Both rides count.
We want you leaving the studio feeling stronger and more energized, but also hopefully a little lighter mentally than when you walked in.
5. Turns Out, Showing Up Is Easier When You Actually Like Where You’re Going
You can have the “perfect” workout program on paper, but it doesn’t mean much if you hate doing it. Consistency matters. And one of the best things about group fitness is that eventually, working out stops feeling like something you’re doing completely alone.
You start recognizing the person who always rides two bikes away from you. Your instructor knows your name. The front desk knows which shoes you wear. Your friends start texting, “Are you riding tomorrow?” And suddenly, there are people expecting to see you. That’s the magic of community and accountability.
At NYX, we want you to come because you want a great workout, but we also want this to be a place you genuinely look forward to being. Because the best workout isn’t necessarily the one that leaves you the most exhausted.
It’s the one you enjoy enough to keep coming back to.
So… How Do You Measure a Good Ride?
At NYX, we don’t have screens or leaderboards telling you how well you performed, and that’s intentional.
Instead, ask yourself:
Are you getting stronger?
Can you hold resistance longer?
Are you recovering faster?
Do you have more energy outside the studio?
Are you more confident on the bike than when you started?
Did you show up for yourself today?
Those are things we can’t put on a screen, and honestly, we think they matter more.
Your workout doesn’t have to be about chasing a calorie count. It can be about building a stronger heart, a stronger body, a clearer mind, and finding a community that makes you actually want to show up. And maybe that’s the real benefit of clipping in.
Welcome to the NYX Blog. We have a lot to talk about.
